12 Thirumurai

Thirumurai refers to the twelve foundational volumes of Tamil Shaiva devotional literature, composed by the Nayanmars and other saints between the 2nd and 12th centuries. It is the heart of Tamil Shaivism, both spiritually and culturally, and is revered as the Tamil Vedas. Sivaya.org is committed to preserving these treasures and presenting them in a clear, accessible format for devotees worldwide.

What Thirumurai Is

Thirumurai (திருமுறை) is a collection of 12 sacred books containing hymns sung in praise of Lord Shiva. These hymns express devotion, surrender, philosophy, temple culture, and lived spiritual experience. They were compiled into the Panniru Thirumurai by Nambi Andar Nambi around the 10th–11th century CE.

The 12 Thirumurais (Overview)

Each Thirumurai has its own flavor, author group, and spiritual emphasis:
- 1–3: Thirukadaikaappu of Sambandar — child-saint’s radiant, joyful devotion.
- 4–6: Thevaram of Appar (Thirunavukkarasar) — deep maturity, surrender, and philosophical clarity.
- 7: Thirupaatu of Sundarar — personal, intimate relationship with Shiva.
- 8: Thiruvasagam & Thirukkovaiyar (Manikkavasagar) — mystical poetry; Thiruvasagam is sweeter than sugar.
- 9: Thiruvisaippa & Thirupallandu — hymns by various saints.
- 10: Thirumandhiram (Thirumoolar) — yoga, tantra, ethics, metaphysics.
- 11: Saiva Prabandham — devotional works by several saints.
- 12: Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar) — life stories of the 63 Nayanmars.

Why Thirumurai Matters

Thirumurai is not just literature; it is a living spiritual tradition:
- Revived Shaivism during the Bhakti movement (7th–10th century).
- Made devotion accessible by using Tamil instead of Sanskrit.
- Preserved temple culture, rituals, and geography (Paadal Petra Sthalams).
- Shaped Saiva Siddhanta philosophy through lived experience rather than abstract theory.
- Continues to be sung daily in temples as Thevaram and Thiruvasagam recitations.

Spiritual Themes You’ll Find

- God as compassionate, intimate, and approachable
- The soul’s journey from bondage to liberation
- The power of grace (arul)
- The beauty of Shiva temples and sacred landscapes
- The emotional spectrum of devotion: joy, longing, surrender, gratitude

How Thirumurai Is Used Today

- Recited in temples during puja and utsavams
- Studied for philosophy, music (pann), and Tamil literature
- Used in meditation and personal prayer
- Forms the basis for Saiva Siddhanta theology
