Thiruppugazh is a revered collection of Tamil devotional hymns composed by Saint Arunagirinathar in praise of Lord Murugan. These hymns are known for their poetic beauty, rhythmic complexity, and deep spiritual meaning. Sivaya.org is committed to preserving these treasures and presenting them in a clear, accessible format for devotees worldwide.
Thiruppugazh is a monumental devotional work composed in the 15th century by Sri Arunagirinathar, a saint-poet from Tiruvannamalai. After receiving the grace of Lord Murugan, he travelled to many sacred shrines singing hymns filled with devotion, philosophy, and musical brilliance. Originally numbering over 16,000 hymns, about 1,300 survive today, celebrated for their poetic beauty and spiritual depth.
The preservation of Thiruppugazh owes much to Sri V.T. Subramania Pillai (VTS), who collected palm-leaf manuscripts and oral traditions from temples across Tamil Nadu. His meticulous work resulted in the first organized printed edition, forming the basis for most modern publications and digital archives.
One of the defining features of Thiruppugazh is its intricate rhythmic structure known as Chandam or Santham. Arunagirinathar introduced dynamic, percussion-friendly meters with complex syllabic patterns that align naturally with musical talas. These rhythms make Thiruppugazh uniquely suited for bhajans, temple singing, and Carnatic percussion accompaniment.
Reciting or listening to Thiruppugazh is believed to bring clarity, courage, and divine protection. Many devotees experience peace, focus, and spiritual upliftment through regular chanting.
